Chariot Canyon, Rodriguez Canyon and Scissors Crossing

PCT mile 64 to 78

Day 5 of the Pacific Crest Trail section hike from Campo to Scissors Crossing

The rain woke me up at 3 AM. It rained hard for a few hours, but I managed to stay mostly dry.

A frog came to visit while I was busy with breakfast. It must have laid dormant all summer and sprung back to life by the rain. First I tried to shoo it off, but it wouldn’t shoo. Then I reached for my camera and it disappeared in one hop.

1:30 pm – Got to Scissor Crossings and to my truck. I saw 3 hikers south bound today. They are getting close to finishing the entire trail.

It took 2 hours to drive to Campo. I picked up my bike at the trading post and back to the start to take photos, then home.

Stats: 77 miles, 10566 ft. up, 11222 ft. down.

PCT Mile 53 – pioneers trail picnic area, water is on.

PCT Mile 59 – A trail angel left a water cache at the Sunrise tail junction. It saves me the half mile back and forth walk to the water tank and filtering out questionable water

PCT mile 10.6 – Hauser Creek, dry, there is a bucket saying PCT water, but it is empty. I guess the trail angles are falling behind.

PCT Mile 20 – Lake Morena campground. There is nobody here. I think the ranger’s office is open, but I am only getting water and continuing.

PCT Mile 24 – cottonwood creek bridge. I biked over this bridge yesterday and didn’t realized the PCT goes right underneath.

PCT Mile 26 – Boulder Oak campground, there is no one here. I have the whole campground to myself. A grey fox came through several times while I was eating. I was unsuccessful getting its picture. Than a border patrolman came to check on me he thought I am a through hiker finishing a southbound hike.

Biking/Hiking – Scissors Crossings to Campo

Day 1 of the Pacific Crest Trail section hike from Campo to Scissors Crossing

3 AM – I can’t sleep. I am going to read a little and then get ready. I want to leave at first light which is about 5:45.

10:15 AM – stopped for a break at Lake Cuyamaca. The place is deserted except for some maintenance people. Along the way a day biker passed me waving and encouraging me.

3:00 PM – made it to Campo. It was 54 miles and 4400 ft of elevation gain on the bicycles. The manager at the Trading Post on Campo let me leave my bike at his basement until I return Saturday to pick them up. This is a good place to resupply. Since they are very well stocked. Contact information for the store owner is: Lance Garmo (619) 4780-5494; campogreenstore@gmail.com

I started walking south to the southern terminus of the PCT which is 1 1/2 miles south of the store. I am going on the same route as the PCT itself since that is the shortest way.

PCT mile 0 to 3

Left home at 8:30 for 8 hours 510 mile drive to Scissors Crossings (H/W 78 and the Great Southern Overland Stage Route). This is the end point for my hike for the following few days.

I forgot to remove the panniers from the bike, so I took this picture at the gas station before I removed them.
