Evolution Loop August 10-15, 2018

Highway 168 from Bishop CA splits in 3 and each side ends in a lake side trailhead to the high Sierras: Sabrina Lake in the center, North Lake in the north and not surprisingly South Lake in the south. Starting at the North Lake trailhead one can cross the Sierra Crest at Piute Pass, pick up the John Muir trail at the junction near the South Fork of the San Jose River, head south climbing through the Evolution Valley and then the Evolution Basin, over Muir Pass, cross the Sierra Crest again at Bishop Pass and finish at the South Lake trailhead. This 58 mile loop is the North Lake to South Lake Loop. The highlight of this trip is the Evolution Basin with it’s amazing scenery, but the rest of the trip is nothing to look down at. I like the scenery from McClure Meadows in the Evolution valley, Helen Lake and LeConte Canyon, the rapids along the San Joaquin, the far vistas from the 3 mountain passes and the view of the Palisades from Dusy Basin, to name a few.

On a moonless night, the sky seen from the mountains is extremely dark. It makes for a perfect sight of the Milky Way.

PCT Lost Valley Spring to Nancy Canyon, mile 120 to 140

24 FEBRUARY 2016, 04:08 AM
My new strategy is to try to write my notes early in the morning before “wake-up”. This is because I am to wasted in the evening after dinner and just want to go to bed. But in the morning I lay wake for a couple of hours waiting for my alarm to go off. Do here I am at 3:00 am writing.

The plane for today is to get water at mile 127 and then at 137 which should be reliable. Camp at Nancy Canyon, mile 140. This leaves 12 miles for tomorrow to get to my truck.

6 am – left camp at first light. It is very windy today and at 5000 ft of elevation somewhat cold. The high point of this section which runs along the Bucksnort Mountain is 5600 ft

The highlight for today is for what I didn’t see. I didn’t see a single person.

Made it to camp at Nancy Canyon. Looks like it is going to be a warm night. This by the way end up being wrong.

Day 2, Tahoe Rim Trail

Early today I motored through Miess Meadow, Shower Lake and Echo Summit and went into the Echo Lake Chalet. This is just my second day, so I don’t need resupply here, just an ice cream bar and I am back on the trail.

I made a mistake of not filling up my water bottle at the chalet. I thought there will be water in streams right on the trail, but there is none. I had to make a detour to Tamarack Lake to get water. Then strolled into Aloha Lake to setup camp. The lake water looks inviting, so I went in for a dip in the water. It is great to feel clean.
